Dog Door Installation in Glass Panels
Letting your dog in and out throughout the day is one of those small inconveniences that adds up fast. Scratched door frames, barking at the back door and muddy paw prints through the house are all signs it is time for a proper dog door. Level and Square Glass installs dog doors directly into glass panels across Sydney, Wollongong and the Illawarra, giving your dog independent access without damaging your door frame or walls.
We are one of the few glaziers in the Wollongong and Illawarra region that offers pet door installation services. If you also have a cat, take a look at our cat doors in glass page.
How Dog Door Installation in Glass Works
Installing a dog door in glass is not the same as cutting a hole in a timber door. Glass panels require a specific process to maintain structural integrity and safety compliance.
1. Measure and assess. We visit your property and measure the existing glass panel, the door frame and the space available for the pet door. We confirm the best door size based on your dog’s breed and shoulder height.
2. Select the door. We supply dog doors from trusted brands including Pettek, TransCat and Pet Doors Australia. For non-standard sizes or unusual panel configurations, we also offer custom pet door solutions.
3. Manufacture the new panel. Your existing glass panel is removed and a new panel of toughened safety glass is manufactured with a pre-cut opening for the dog door. Toughened glass cannot be cut after it has been tempered, so the opening must be cut before the glass goes through the toughening process.
4. Install and test. We fit the new glass panel into your frame, install the dog door and test the locking mechanism and flap action. The old panel is removed and disposed of. The entire installation is completed to Australian Standards.
Choosing the Right Size Dog Door
Selecting the correct door size matters for your dog’s comfort and for the security of your home. A door that is too small will discourage your dog from using it, and a door that is too large creates an unnecessary opening.
Small dogs (Dachshund, Jack Russell, Cavalier King Charles): A small pet door with an opening around 200mm x 300mm is typically suitable.
Medium dogs (Border Collie, Staffy, Cocker Spaniel): A medium door with an opening around 260mm x 370mm gives enough clearance.
Large dogs (Labrador, Golden Retriever, German Shepherd): A large door with an opening around 300mm x 440mm accommodates these breeds comfortably.
Extra large dogs (Great Dane, Bernese Mountain Dog, Mastiff): An extra large or custom door with an opening of 350mm x 500mm or more is required.
We will confirm the exact size recommendation when we measure at your property. If your dog is between sizes or still growing, we will advise on the best option to avoid replacing the door again later.
Glass Types and Safety
Every dog door we install goes into a new panel of toughened safety glass. This is a requirement under the Building Code of Australia for door panels and any glass below 1 metre from floor level. Toughened glass is significantly stronger than standard float glass and, if broken, it shatters into small blunt pieces rather than large sharp shards.
We do not install dog doors into existing glass panels. The panel must be replaced with new toughened glass that has the opening pre-cut during manufacturing. This is the only method that maintains the structural integrity and safety rating of the glass.
